International Workshop On
Cultivating and Sustaining Productivity
in African Public Enterprises
(13 - 15 August 1998)
OVERVIEW
The rate at which state-owned enterprises are being privatised across Africa is indicative
of the growing impatience and dissatisfaction of governments with these loss-making and
resource-sapping organisation. While privatisation may indeed be the only viable solution
for most state-owned enterprises in Africa, it remains indisputable that, for purposes of
national security and pride, certain organisations will continue to be owned and run by
state.
OBJECTIVE
The workshop is designed to give participants (new) insights into how they could improve
productivity in their respective organisations.

- Protectionism, Political Intervention and Cost-Plus Pricing as discentives to
Productivity in State-Owned Enterprises

- Effective Communication as a Cornerstone of Productivity.
- Measuring Productivity in State-Owned Enterprises.
- Case Study of Some Successful African Enterprises.
The workshop activities include opening ceremonies, presentation of papers, separate group
discussions, feedback on group discussions, panel discussions, socials (including a picnic
in a game reserve) and closing ceremonies.
